McDivitt Law Firm Video PSA Contest
McDivitt Makes A Difference
Every spring, McDivitt Law Firm hosts a video public service announcement (PSA) contest that invites high school students in Colorado Springs and Pueblo to use their creativity to encourage fellow teens to take responsibility for their actions. This year, the law firm is asking teens to focus on safe driving and discuss problems such as distracted driving, lack of seatbelt use, and impaired driving. The rules are simple: Create a video PSA that encourages fellow teens to be better drivers. Your topic can focus on one of the following ideas, or can come up with your own. Just be sure your message stays on the topic of safe driving.
Underage Drinking and Driving
Alcohol-related crashes are the second leading cause of teen death, and young DUI offenders face the risk of losing their academic eligibility, college acceptance, and scholarship awards. Produce a PSA and give your friends a reminder about the serious and life-altering effects of drunk driving.
Teens and Seat Belt Safety
Teens are more likely to get hurt in car crashes than any other age group, and one main reason is that teens have lower seatbelt use rates than adults. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported more than half of 16- to 20-year olds who were involved in fatal car accidents weren’t wearing seatbelts.
The Dangers of Distracted Driving
A recent survey revealed more than half of Colorado’s teens text or talk on their cell phones while driving. While teens recognize distracted driving as a serious and dangerous problem, many seem to continue the practice, placing themselves and others on the road at risk. With age comes responsibility, and this is your chance to tell others to just hang up and drive.
A Few Ideas for Your PSA
Different Perspectives
Interview a police officer, crash victim, or a friend to get a personal take on the topic. Use different perspectives to present your message.
Discuss the Repercussions of Risky Driving
In addition to causing serious injuries and fatalities, risky driving can result in a suspended driver’s license, juvenile detention, attorney fees and court costs, and probation.
The Cold, Hard Facts
Sometimes putting things into perspective is the best way to make your point. For instance:
- Nearly 50,000 traffic accidents were attributed to underage impaired drivers.
- Every day, three teens die when they drink alcohol and drive.
- Using a cell phone increases the risk of an accident by four times.
- Drivers reaching for something are nine times more likely to have an accident than drivers who pay attention to the road.
